Building Science

The course introduces students to the nature and properties of construction materials and their selection.  It illustrates problems that might arise through injudicious choice of materials and the reasons behind the selections of materials for particular applications.  It deals with the interaction of  soil, cement and concrete, stones, timber, metal (iron and steel, aluminum, copper, brass, bronze, zinc), corrosion, ceramics, glass, polymer, paints and composites.  The science of thermal, acoustic and fire properties of building components as a whole. 

Elements of Geotechnical Engineering

The objective of this course unit is to introduce students to the basic concepts of geotechnical engineering including rocks, soil, and foundation design. Basic in-situ testing of rocks, soil, etc. Design basics for shallow and deep foundations, retaining walls. Field and laboratory investigations of soils and rocks.
