INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNICATION AND EXTENSION METHODS

Introduces students to (human) communication theories and communication models and analyses the communication process; including audience analysis, and message design. Examines extension/communication methods; nature and classification and selection and use of appropriate methods in implementing extension programmes.

POULTRY MANAGEMENT 1

Characteristics of the poultry industry in Uganda/E.Africa.Characteristics of the East African indigenous chickens.Development of modern commercial chicken lines.Overview of the systems of poultry management.Housing poultry and house equipment.Management of a broiler flock.Management of egg-type chickens.Management of ducks and turkeys.Approaches to maximizing profits from a poultry enterprise, and enterprise combinations.

INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNICATION AND EXTENSION METHODS

Introduces students to (human) communication theories and communication models and analyses the communication process; including audience analysis, and message design. Examines extension/communication methods; nature and classification and selection and use of appropriate methods in implementing extension programmes.

ECONOMIC ENTOMOLOGY AND NEMATOLOGY

The course provides overview of insect/nematode damage to plants, how organisms become pests, insect/nematode damage and life cycles and briefly description of control measures plant-parasitic nematodes. Students will learn relate basic insect/nematode morphological structures to ecology, life cycle, damage they cause, interactions with other organisms, and management tactics to control population densities.

DAIRY PRODUCTION SYSTEMS

Introduction: importance, trends and prospects, limitations and production systems; Establishing a dairy herd; Routine management practices; Management of young and replacement stock; Reproductive management in a dairy herd; Feeding the dairy herd; Milk secretion, milking and milk quality; Dairy cattle health management; Orientation to and practical hands-on of body condition scoring, judging cattle for dairy form, drawing a breeding chart using a universal calendar; making feed budgets for a dairy herd.

INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNICATION AND EXTENSION METHODS

Introduces students to (human) communication theories and communication models and analyses the communication process; including audience analysis, and message design. Examines extension/communication methods; nature and classification and selection and use of appropriate methods in implementing extension programmes. Overview of (audio-) visual aids their role and use in extension work, including practical training on producing good visual aids.

ANIMAL SCIENCE FOR AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERS

Importance of animals to man.  Relevance of Animal Science to the field of Agricultural Engineering.  Classes of domestic animals according to anatomy of digestive system.  Basic principles of animal production. Physical and physiological mechanisms of adaptation.  Effects of environment on farm animals

PASTURE AGRONOMY

This course introduces students pursuing a degree in Bachelor of Science in Agriculture to the general principles of pasture production and management, and forage utilization by livestock.
