About this Program

The Department of Educational Foundations and Management offers a Master of Education in Educational Foundations to graduate students wishing to specialize in Educational Foundational Courses in order to develop a comprehensive theoretical framework of vital importance in instructing professionals.  Graduates taking this program can specialize in six foundational areas namely Educational Administration; Economics of education; Philosophy of Education; Comparative Education; History of Education and Sociology of Education. General Programme ObjectivesThe Masters Degree in Educational Foundations and management shall enable graduates, teachers, administrators, policy makers and community development workers to:

  • translate  the acquired knowledge into critical awareness of educational problems and processes;
  • Practice the acquired skills for analyzing, evaluating and interpreting the relationship between education and society and apply these in real educational situations;
  • Utilize knowledge, methods and techniques related to foundations and management of education so as to develop professional ways of thinking, judging and acting among teacher trainees; and
  • Initiate and execute educational changes and programmes in the education system

Programme OutcomesGraduates for  this programme should be able to

  1. Lecturers of Educational Foundations content and methods for instructions in tertiary institutions including Universities and teacher education institutions.
  2.  Integrate foundational issues in the National and Schools education agenda
  3.  To deal with contemporary changes that relate to the dynamism of educational systems in the region and the world at large
  4.   To equip Inspectors or subject related administrators or supervisors in the ministry responsible for education, in the districts and with NGO’s providing standardized education services.
  5.  Guide specialists in the National Curriculum Development Centre and institutions with similar functions.

 Structure and Duration of the Masters Education in Educational FoundationsThe programme shall have two teaching and two research semesters.  In the first semester the students will offer 2 Core Research courses (EDU 7101, EDU 7102), and Three compulsory educational courses EDF 7102, CUS 7102, and EDF 7101)  and an optional papers from one of the six foundational disciplines areas one wishes to specialize in. EDF 7101 is typically the foundational course relevant to the programme and models the students to acquire general skills in Educational Foundation which enables them to specialize in the various foundational areas.In the second semester the students cover three other core educational courses in Foundations (EDF 7201 and EDF 7202, EDF 7203) and 2 optional (electives) from any of the six foundational disciplines.Seminar series shall be conducted in both Semesters on topical issues as identified by the Department Lecturers and will contribute to Course Work in the various areas of specialization. During the recess term students will be required to write and defend their research proposals. The Research proposal shall carry 20% of the mark for the research and dissertation.Eligibility:Applicants must b teachers with a good first degree in or with education.Applicants who did the post graduate diploma in education must have obtained atleast a class2 diploma.
