Both macro- and micro- nutrient deficiencies are significant public health problems in Uganda and other developing countries and are directly responsible for high morbidity and mortality among the vulnerable groups especially children. In Africa, more than a third of the children are stunted and face a range of physical and cognitive challenges. Under nutrition is also the underlying problem in other disease states resulting in more serious outcomes. At the same time, nutrition-related chronic non-communicable diseases (CNCD) like diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases are on the increase and contributing to unnecessary disability and death among the most productive adults in society.
