Course Description & Objectives: 

Objectives:

  • Students should demonstrate the knowledge, skills and attitudes to enable them to diagnose, assess and treat acquired neurological disorders – including: dysarthria, verbal apraxia / dyspraxia, aphasia / dysphasia and dysphagia (in children and adults)

Content:

  • Causes, clinical presentation and prevention of acquired neurological communication disorders in children and adults
  • Neurological/medical implications and potential impact on communication/swallowing
  • Definitions of communication and swallowing disorders
  • Assessment and intervention
  • Theories of assisted recovery of language function and rehabilitation
  • Treatment/management of acquired neurological communication/swallowing disorders
  • Liaison with other professionals
