Course Description & Objectives: 

This course prepares prospective teachers on professional and social issues in mathematics education. It equips them with the knowledge, skills, methods and current concepts in mathematics education. It outlines the standards of the professional development of teachers of mathematics and the roles of the head of mathematics and others involved in mathematics education. It aims at using participatory approach. 

Learning Outcomes: 

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Define and differentiate the following terms: images of mathematics; internationalization and globalization;
  • Explore the use and application of ethno-mathematics in mathematics instruction.
  • Explain the different roles of the mathematics teacher.
  • Apply different standards for the teaching of Mathematics 
  • Discuss various professional development approaches for teachers of mathematics and standards
  • Outline the different stages of the mathematics teacher development
  • Explore the different roles and duties of the Head of mathematics department in schools
  • Discuss the roles of other stakeholders engaged in mathematics education
