Course Description & Objectives: 

This course discusses the basic equipment used in modern chemical analysis employing techniques such as magnetic susceptibility measurements, UV-Vis, NMR, IR, X-Ray diffraction, polarimetry, chromatography, conductivity and atomic absorption. Preparations of selected compounds and isolation of simple natural products

Learning Outcomes: 

At the end of the course, the student is expected to: 

  • Use modern chemical instruments.
  • Interpret instrumental data in terms of both qualitative and quantitative aspects of substances.
  • Prepare selected compounds
  • Identify and confirm unknown compounds.
  • Isolate natural products such as essential oils and fixed oils.
