Course Description & Objectives: 

This course is designed for learners’ critical engagement with texts for their appreciation of the authors’ context and experiences therein and their value for message to society.   It will teach key research undertakings and findings on the aspect of text and discourse and their value for language education development.  Based on literary theory, it aims at emphasising not only the wealth and currency of literary knowledge but also of the significance for use.  It is oriented toward the goal of enabling the learner to critique text for its aesthetic and ethical value.    ObjectivesThe course will equip the learner with:

  1. knowledge of literary theory;
  2. knowledge of the contribution of criticism to the art industry;
  3. skills of critiquing text at the discrete and the global level, and  
  4. critique the value of different theories for classroom practice in teaching literature.
Learning Outcomes: 

 Learning OutcomesThe learner will be able to:

  1. demonstrate an understanding of the significance of selected literary theory in the analysis of text;
  2. apply various relevant theory to different texts, and
  3. analyse and make sense of a wide range of texts by different authors from different regions and time settings.
