Course Description & Objectives: 

Course Description:   This course is intended to introduce students to the various issues in Children’s Literature in the context of pre-primary, primary and secondary school education. Focus is on the underlying theoretical concepts and issues, close study of selected works and practical classroom implications.  Objectives:The course is styled to equip learners with:

  1. knowledge of the historical and cultural contexts of children’s literature
  2. understanding of the meaning and function of children’s literature
  3. competences for designing literature projects for children
  4. understanding of the progression of traditional fairy tales into the 21st century
Learning Outcomes: 

Learners will be able to:

  1. enjoy and analyze literature for children
  2. research the background, history and cultural context of children’s literature
  3. analyze the reading interests of children
  4. analyze the reading interests encouraged by teachers and parents
  5. discuss and experiment with the art of storytelling
  6. evaluate the style and illustrations of contemporary picture book illustrators
  7. develop projects for children’s reading and writing, drama and pictorial representation of ideas
  8. examine the role of children’s literature in child development
