Course Description & Objectives: 

Presently, there are a number of global trend that are reshaping education, including gender, globalization, peace education, environmental issues.  Gender is recognized as one of the critical variable in education.  Thus the need to understand issues and concerns surrounding gender in education is of paramount importance to teachers. This course examines historical and current issues in education and how they are impacted upon by gender, with particular reference to pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial era. The course will enable students to explore gender dynamics in traditional Africa education and their effects. It will also expose students to the various intervention strategies aimed at enhancing gender equity and equality both internationally and nationally. Students will also explore gender issues after introduction of western education and how they influence educational practice. 

Learning Outcomes: 

This course should enable students to;

  1. Explain the trend in the education of men and women.
  2. Evaluate educational provision in African traditional societies.
  3. Analyze gender issues in current education system from a historical perspective.
  4. Assess policies aimed at promoting gender equity.
