The course examines both the general and specific characteristics of Western Serial Music; the major instrumental and vocal forms; the main composers and the analysis of the major representative works of the period. It equips students with the knowledge of modern (since 1945) Western concert music literature and its relationship with major sociological and political events, and aesthetic and philosophical movements. It involves with listening to and analysis of key musical works. In addition to class attendance, course work includes a written project and a class presentation based on research and analysis of a specific modern work of the student’s choice.
