In the information or knowledge society, it is important to recognize and protect knowledge created, developed and enhanced by communities of people, and which acknowledges that men and women have differential access to the structures that shape knowledge systems. Such an instrument needs to be developed with the full participation of all parties who hold such knowledge, including men and women, especially information professionals that are engaged in information capture, storage, processing and dissemination.
