Course Description & Objectives:

The course will deal with teacher education (TE) policy and characteristics of language teacher education (LTE) programmes in different countries and regions. It will tackle and contextualise issues of knowledge, practical and professional elements of the language teacher preparation and development programmes. In separate language groups learners will also learn content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge relevant to their languages of interest Objectives:The course is designed to equip learners with;

knowledge of intentions of language teacher education.
knowledge of language teacher education trends in the Africa region and elsewhere;
skills of critiquing educational reform for implications for language teacher education;
skills of selecting content for language teacher education;
skills of presenting curriculum for language teacher education programmes, and
evaluating the performance of language tutors, materials and whole programmes in teacher education.

Learners will be able to:

critique and design curricula for pre- and in-service language teacher education programmes;
teach on pre- and in-service language teacher education programmes;
write and evaluate materials for pre- and in-service language teacher education programmes,
assess the content knowledge and pedagogical and professional skills of teachers, and
evaluate teaching practices on language teacher education programmes.
