Course Description & Objectives: 

The course explores the historical perspective in sculpture and ceramics from the pre-historic period to modern times; regarding characteristics, style, motives, materials and tools used.  A survey of the training institutions and their specific methods of training are explored and their effects on modern sculpture and ceramics.  Sculpture and ceramics studio technology is surveyed based on traditional and modern concepts, methods, techniques and approaches.  The course also surveys the preparation, limitations and possibilities of various materials used in ceramics and sculpture. 

Learning Outcomes: 

By the end of this course, learners should be in position to.

  1. Discuss the historical development of sculpture and ceramics through different ages as regards the methods and techniques used.
  2. Experiment with different tools, materials and techniques used in the teaching of sculpture and ceramics.
  3. Examine the physical and chemical properties of clay and other materials used in sculpture and ceramics.
  4. Examine the different styles used in sculpture and ceramics in relation to the materials used.
  5. Assess the teaching of sculpture and ceramics at different education levels
