This course provides an overview of the cultural/linguistic regions of Eastern Africa and addresses methodological issues in the study of East African societies. Kinship, as a concept, and linkages between kinship, economic and political spheres of life; the role of age and gender in social stratification; the concept of ethnicity, religion and the social functions of religion; politics, and the maintenance of order in stateless societies.
