Topics include: introduction to materialistic philosophy, pre-colonial social relations, indigenous religions and philosophies, pre-capitalist modes of production, the mercantilist system in East Africa, the growth of the Indian ocean trade, coastal city states and civilisation, the inland trade and its impact, the dawn of Islam and Christianity, the process of integrating E. Africa into the world capitalist system.
