Course Description & Objectives: 

This course is an overview of the major issues pertaining to developing countries, with particular emphasis on social change and social action.  The course is aimed at introducing students to mainstream sociological theories and perspectives of development and underdevelopment.  It deals with approaches/theories of development including the concept of development, modernization theory; neo-populism, the basic human needs approach, neo-classicism and neo-Marxist theories; eco-development, post-modernism, and human development approach.
