Course Description & Objectives: 

In this course, learners will be exposed to the theory of inspection in general and its application in language education before they go on to practice supervision and inspection of language teachers in schools and colleges.  They will learn how to conduct inspection and support supervision of teachers for strengthening their capacity to deliver language curricula at different grade levels in the school system.  They will also learn how to produce, present and influence plough back of inspection reports into school language and literature programmes.  Course practicals will be conducted in demonstration and college schools and teachers colleges as part of university-school collaboration projects.Objectives:The course intended to equip learners with:

  1. knowledge of referentials for quality in language education;
  2. knowledge of principles and practices in supervision and inspection of language and literature teaching programmes;
  3. knowledge of the qualities of an effective inspector;
  4. knowledge of the philosophy of integrative language teaching approaches;
  5. knowledge of communicative language teaching methodologies;
  6. skills of assessing classroom methodology;
  7. skills of analysing teaching-learning contexts;
  8. skills of mentoring language teachers and in-school supervisors, and
  9. skills of reporting assessment.
Learning Outcomes: 

Learners will be able to:

  1. define standards for language and literature teaching;
  2. provide support supervision for language and literature teachers;
  3. assess classroom teaching of language and literature at all educational levels;
  4. recommend practices for language and literature teaching in specified contexts.
