Course Description & Objectives: 

This is a survey course which analyses major developments in the History of Africa from the scramble for and partition of Africa to present day independent Africa.

  1. New Imperialism:  background to the scramble and partition of Africa.
  2. The Scramble and partition of Africa: the various schools of thought.
  3. Colonization of Africa: The various methods – conquest pacification and “Treaty” making.
  4. The Impact of Colonial rule on Africa: effect on indigenous African political, social and economic institutions.
