Urban Sociology

This course analyses debates and perspectives concerned with the process and dynamics of urban settlement, aimed at developing a critical understanding of urbanization, focusing on the mechanisms and processes affecting socio-economic and political life in urban areas. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of contemporary issues in urban development from a Sociological point of view.  

Sociology of Ethnicity, Migration, and Identity Studies

This course will cover current issues related to ethnicity, migration and nationhood, specifically focusing on debates about the concepts of ‘tribe’ or ‘ethnicity’ and how they relate to personal identity and nationality. Students should be able to assess the impact of ethnic migration on access to resources by different ethnic groups.  Among the most important issue is the resultant conflicts and competition over resources with case studies from East Africa.   

Dynamics of African Livelihoods

This course focuses on discussing African livelihoods in pre-colonial and post-colonial Era and the interdependence between these livelihoods. Major issues covered include different modes of subsistence or human adaptation and how these links to social organization in selected societies will be analyzed. Other areas of focus are foreign intrusion of Africa and effect on people’s livelihoods and the evolutionary model of livelihoods and its critique.   

FEMINISM, ACTIVISM AND CIVIL SOCIETY

The concept of civil society, advocacy; feminist activism; international, regional and national feminist advocacy initiatives; advocacy and the policy making process; Advocacy as a political tool for change; Significance of advocacy to gender and development; NGOs and gender advocacy, social movements.    

SEXUALITY CONCEPTS AND PERSPECTIVES

The historical contexts of construction and deconstruction of sexualities; notions of sexuality, culture and identities, embodied gender, women and men’s bodies, abuse and harassment; Reproductive wellbeing, Adolescent sexuality, vulnerability, healthcare, rights and technologies., heternormativity; The control of sexuality, symbolic and material significance of notions of sexuality in development  

Comparative Criminal Justice studies

This course will introduce students to the various components of the criminal justice systems in several nations.  Students will study the reasons why one should study the systems of other nations, difficulties in comparisons and how to do a comparative analysis.  Students will become familiar with the four main “families of law” or “legal traditions” and be able to identify the foundations of a nation’s legal system.   In addition, students will compare the adversarial and inquisitorial systems of justice particularly with regard to pre-trial and trial processes, compare the mechanisms for

Criminal Justice Policy

This course offers an overview of theoretical developments and empirical research in criminology and criminal policy. It will address major defining theoretical tradition and critical empirical test of that theory. It will also offer a critique of the theory or the research generated by it. In addition, it will offer an attempt to translate the theory into policy. The major issues addressed will include introductions, social disorganization, differential association, anomie, and social control theories.

Abnormal Psychology

The course aims at making students appreciate the theoretical perspectives of abnormal behaviour, understand the development and symptoms of various types of abnormal behaviour as well as explore the strategies available in the treatment of abnormal behaviour. Personnel and Human Resources Psychology

The course aims at helping students understand the applications of individual differences, behavior and job performance in the workplace. It also considers the human skills and talents needed for certain jobs and assessment for potential employees, evaluation of job performance, and training for improved performance
