Labour Law for Construction

Individual employment:  The common law of contract of employment, unfair dismissal and the Basic Conditions of Employment Act; Labour Relations Framework; the Constitution &Labour Relations Act; Collective labour law; freedom of association and organizational rights; collective bargaining and collective agreements; dispute resolution; strike and lockout; workers’ Participation.  Discrimination and employment equity. 

Land Registration

The purpose of this course unit is to train students to fully appreciate the process and record keeping challenges in land registration. Registration of various types of land titles, renewal, extension, etc. land registration process and systems. Introduction to land information systems.     

Research Methods and Statistics

This course considers research methods and statistical techniques necessary for conducting research.  Topics to be covered include various types of research, developing of research proposals, conducting literature reviews, designing of survey instruments, methods of data collection, and techniques for data analysis.  In respect of statistical techniques the topics to be covered include measures of central tendency, measures of dispersion, statistical inference, probability distributions, parametric and non-parametric tests, regression and correlation analysis.    

Investment Appraisal II

Considers the use of shadow or efficiency prices in the appraisal of public sector projects.  Examines the rationale for the use of world prices to value inputs as well as outputs, discusses how to evaluate projects by using the world price numeraire and how governments make decisions when market and shadow prices give different signals.  Choice of an appropriate social rate of discount and about different methods of discounting in public sector

Provides an introduction to the elements of planning law and their application to the construction industry with particular emphasis to Uganda.  Development control codes and regulations, operation of planning law in Uganda 

Maintenance Management (4,0,4)

maintenance and the various types of maintenance.  Considers trade-offs between planned, responsive and cyclic maintenance and examines the cost implications of including various proportions of each in a maintenance programme.  Formation of the maintenance programme from the basic maintenance policy and objectives of the organization.Life cycle costing techniques and their application to asset maintenance.Methods for establishing maintenance budget plans and cost control systems.  

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

Financial management deals with acquisition and use of funds.
