Course Description & Objectives: 

This course will cover the main aspects of pain assessment, diagnosis and control in the patient with palliative care needs. The appropriate use of available drugs in managing pain a, especially morphine and adjuvant drugs will be discussed, the pharmacological principles will be presented and management utilising a multi-professional approach. The major pain syndromes will be outlined. 

Learning Outcomes: 

Upon completion of this course unit the students will be able to:

  • Understand the anatomy and physiology of pain and the therapeutic implications
  • Be able to describe the difference between nociceptive and neuropathic pain
  • Assess and diagnose different types of pain and undertake effective management to control these or referral for appropriate intervention
