Course Description & Objectives: 

The course targets teachers and people working in the field of science education.  The course will discuss the philosophical basis of evaluation and then the theory and practice of measurement and evaluation as it applies to science education curricula, instruction and programs.  The role of tests and examinations in effective teaching/learning will be considered followed by a discussion on these as tools for assessment and evaluation. Construction and standardization of an achievement test also will be done. 

Learning Outcomes: 

By the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  1. Discuss the philosophical basis for evaluation and state and explain the different purposes of tests and examinations.
  2. Apply the theory and practice of measurement and evaluation to science education curricula instruction and programmes.
  3. Identify appropriate performance objectives to assess pupils’ achievement in each of the education domains.
  4. Describe and discuss the application of the different types of tests and standardized tests to assessment in science subjects.
  5. Design good, valid test items that appropriately assess the different educational objectives.
