Course Description & Objectives: 

Drawing from the local and global arenas, this course explores the conceptual and theoretical perspectives on the process of curriculum evaluation in relation to current practices. Over the fifteen sessions of the course, we shall explore the various forms of evaluation using case studies at the classroom and at program levels. The role of curriculum evaluation in influencing policy and implementation will be critiqued. Further, students shall have a hands-on experience with the various evaluation researches and how they are conducted. Course objectives/Aims:The central premise of this course is to develop an understanding among students of the centrality of curriculum evaluation to school and educational improvement, as well as prepare them for their role as evaluators in education and training. Through its highly interactive lectures and group presentations, students will be able to:

  1. Develop an understanding of the role of Curriculum Evaluation in Curriculum Development and Educational programmes.
  2. Appreciate the cultural, philosophical and contextual issues in curriculum evaluation.
  3. Gain knowledge and skills to evaluate curricular materials, educational practices and policies in the light of theoretical principles and ideological perspectives that inform them.
  4. Develop capacity for deeper reflection on their experiences of curriculum evaluation in various educational and training settings and their implications.
  5. Develop skills for continuous self and peer evaluation for professional development.
Learning Outcomes: 
  1. Ability to appreciate cultural, philosophical and contextual issues in curriculum evaluation.
  2. Ability to critique evaluation and assessment strategies. 
  3. Ability to develop evaluate self and others’ practice through reflective journals, peer reviews, appraisals etc.
  4. Assess students and programs using valid instruments.

5. Conduct action research as part of their continued professional development
