Course Description & Objectives: 

The course looks at the growth of economics as a field of study. It covers some landmarks in the scope of economics. The major topics include: a study of the elements that characterize the economic domain of interest, introduction of economics as a discipline of study in schools, the nature of economics education, the aims of teaching economics, the purpose that economics education might serve, the notion of economic literacy, development of the technical language in the field of economics, realism and relationship between theory, distribution and application in the teaching of economics, and values in economics teaching. It emphasizes economic literacy as key to effective citizenship in a free society, understanding of economic generalizations and concepts, and making reasoned economic decisions.  

Learning Outcomes: 

The course in development conception of economics is designed to assist prospective teachers to:-

  1. Enhance their understanding of economics as a field of study.
  2. Develop and promote an awareness of the nature of economics education.
  3. Acquire a deep understanding of the aims of teaching economics.
  4. Develop an understanding of the values in teaching economics.
