Course Description & Objectives: 

This course covers concepts of and common diseases (communicable and non communicable) causing most morbidity and mortality, surveillance, international health regulations, diagnostic and treatment methods, prevention and control measures, as well as the epidemiological, operational, political and other contextual issues surrounding communicable disease control in emergency settings.  Objectives:   

  • To provide the students with knowledge and understanding of the common causes and control and prevention of communicable and non communicable diseases in emergencies that cause most morbidity and mortality, discuss disease surveillance, diagnostic methods, treatment of those conditions and prevention and prevention strategies/measures. Discuss the epidemiological, operational, political and other contextual issues related to communicable and non communicable disease prevention and control in emergency settings.
Learning Outcomes: 

 At the end of the course, the student should be able to: 

  • Identify the communicable and non communicable diseases that contribute most to excess morbidity and mortality among refugees and displaced persons.
  • Discuss basic principles for communicable disease control in emergency and post conflict and common disease control strategies including prevention, surveillance and out-break prevention
  • Discuss methods for conducting needs assessment
  • Discuss methods of epidemic investigation
  • Describe steps for setting up surveillance  systems in emergencies
  • Discuss the causes, risk factors, clinical features and management of common diseases
  • Discuss key prevention measures specific to the communicable diseases presented
  • Explain the importance of working at the community level rather than relying exclusively on hospitals and clinics (describe the methods for promoting community-based and community-led communicable and non communicable disease control approaches
  • Discuss the epidemiological, operational, political and other contextual issues surrounding communicable and non communicable disease control in emergency settings.
  • Discuss the institution and management of command system/centre for emergency response
