Objectives:
- By the end of the course, students should be able to demonstrate theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the principles and practice of clinical audiology
· Students should be able to identify some of the causes of hearing impairment / deafness· Students should have knowledge of the assessment, management and rehabilitation strategies for working with people with a hearing impairment / deafness· Students will show awareness of the implications of hearing impairment / deafness for an individual, their family and the communityContent:
- Introduction to basic terminology, frequency and intensity, normal hearing curves, hearing thresholds
- Introduction to psychoacoustics (perception of sound, loudness, pitch, frequency etc)
- Structure and function of the ear
- Disorders of hearing in Uganda
- Causes and progress of hearing impairments
- Subjective and Objective tests of hearing/auditory function for children and adults
- Interpretation of audiological assessment data and the implications
- Assessment and management strategies with an individual with hearing impairment
- Psychology and sociology of hearing impairment
- Basic fitting, maintenance and trouble shooting for hearing aids
- Role of the audiologist and attendance at audiology clinic
- Sensitization, networking and collaboration e.g. UNAD, PADECA, MSD, USDC, NUDIPU
