The course enables students to gain a basic understanding of human rights especially the right to health in emergency settings, and to examine ethical practice during public health emergencies and the relevant ethics in research and other interventions during disasters. The international humanitarian laws and human rights laws that ensure the protection of the rights of individuals living in emergency situations will the discussed, with a particular focus on the rights of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs). The link between the right to health, other human rights and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) will be examined. The course will also review the work of organizations which operate in emergencies and consider the extent to which they ensure comprehensive protection of the rights of persons living in emergencies.
