Course Description & Objectives:

This course examines the introduction, spread and the socio-political status of Kiswahili in Uganda. The role of missionaries and colonial administrators and the kings of Buganda in its spread will also be considered. Special attention will be paid to the Uganda language policy vis-à-vis Kiswahili.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this course, learners will be able to describe the introduction and spread of Kiswahili in East Africa and particularly in Uganda.
The learners will also be able to explain the status of Kiswahili in pre colonial and post colonial Uganda
Learners will also be able to identify the fields and sectors in which Kiswahili is used and its role in Uganda today.
