Course Description & Objectives:

This course deals with the relationship between the mass media and society. To a large degree, it deals with how journalists practice responsible journalism. The course explores the theoretical and conceptual frameworks for the responsibilities of journalists; borrowing generously from models of human behavior developed by philosophers such as Aristotle, Emmanuel Kant, John Stuart Mill and others. At another level, the course provides cases of how to handle the most common ethical dilemmas that confront the journalist in day-to-day work.
