Course Description & Objectives: 

The course focuses on the goal of sustainable development – which is to enable all people throughout the world to satisfy their basic needs and enjoy a better quality of life, without compromising the quality of life of future generations". The planning system, which determines the location and form of development, is a key mechanism for delivering sustainable development, both in urban and rural locations. The course further focuses on how to promote the highest quality development and most beneficial land-use changes, in the most appropriate locations at the most appropriate times, and conversely prevent inappropriate, poorly located, poor quality or unnecessary development.

Learning Outcomes: 

On completion of this course, students will be able to:1. Discuss critically efforts to create sustainable communities through the mechanisms of the planning system;2. Discuss the role of the citizen as a key stakeholder in planning for a sustainable future;3. Evaluate a range of sustainable planning concepts, including the compact city concept, smart growth, the concept of the eco-town.4. Urbanization and Environment, climate change and adaptation
