The course focuses on the goal of sustainable development – which is to enable all people throughout the world to satisfy their basic needs and enjoy a better quality of life, without compromising the quality of life of future generations". The planning system, which determines the location and form of development, is a key mechanism for delivering sustainable development, both in urban and rural locations. The course further focuses on how to promote the highest quality development and most beneficial land-use changes, in the most appropriate locations at the most appropriate times, and conversely prevent inappropriate, poorly located, poor quality or unnecessary development.
On completion of this course, students will be able to:1. Discuss critically efforts to create sustainable communities through the mechanisms of the planning system;2. Discuss the role of the citizen as a key stakeholder in planning for a sustainable future;3.
