The course addresses analyses of the major classical sociological theory aimed at exploring the theoretical and methodological foundations of Sociology as a discipline. Classical contemporary and post modernistic Sociological theories are treated in relationship to practical situations in developing countries. The course equips students with tools of analysis that can help them to interpret the current realities in African societies.  

The African continent has varied people and cultural traditions. The north has Arabs, the Sahel and Nilo-Saharan stock of people. The horn of Africa has Cushites and the rest of Africa is made of myriad of agriculturalists, pastoralists, and foragers ranging from the Bantu speakers to Khoisan speakers. The course focuses on selected groups of people from different parts of Africa in order to understand their nature, cultural set-up and identity. It is appropriate course for students in all disciplines.  

This course analyses debates and perspectives concerned with the process and dynamics of urban settlement, aimed at developing a critical understanding of urbanization, focusing on the mechanisms and processes affecting socio-economic and political life in urban areas. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of contemporary issues in urban development from a Sociological point of view.  

Introduction to the nature and structure of rural societies in developing countries, to enable students to analyze and understand the network of social, economic and political processes of rural living, and how they influence social interaction.  Based on this understanding, students are prepared to undertake subsequent studies in other sociology courses, including Rural Development.  

The course introduces students to the area of political philosophy and to the development of the political idea from ancient times to the present, through an analysis of texts written by political philosophers whose works constitute milestones in the development of the political idea, and through a discussion of the resolutions they offer to various political issues. 

This course will introduce students to the various components of the criminal justice systems in several nations.  Students will study the reasons why one should study the systems of other nations, difficulties in comparisons and how to do a comparative analysis.  Students will become familiar with the four main “families of law” or “legal traditions” and be able to identify the foundations of a nation’s legal system.   In addition, students will compare the adversarial and inquisitorial systems of justice particularly with regard to pre-trial and trial processes, compare the mechanisms for

This course introduces students to shifts in the types and forms of crime as a result of changes in technology, internet-based crimes, pornography, fraud, and laundering. Others include small arms proliferation and crime, criminal legislation against such crimes and implications for societal harmony and stability, and criminal Justice for such crimes   

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to a variety of topics and issues in the white-collar crime area. The course will examine types, causes and the measurement of white-collar crime. Specifically, this course will review the debate regarding the definition of white-collar crime, overview the costs of white-collar and corporate crime to society, consider competing theories to explain white-collar criminality and explore the use of criminal sanctions to deter the misconduct of corporations, including environmental crime.
