ENTOMOLOGY AND PARASITOLOGY

By the end of the course, learners should be able to:

1. Define entomology and it branches with examples
2. Describe the factors that led to the success of class insecta and state the economic importance of insects.
3. Explain the origin of insects and state the characteristics of orders in class insecta
4. Describe the insect integument including the moulting process; head and thorax  appendages; reproduction, excretion, respiration and digestion.
5. Explain the principles of pest management/control.
6. Acquire the procedures, protocol and precautions for collecting, processing, transporting and identifying insect specimens.
7. Analyze differences and similarities between protozoa and helminthes diseases.
8. Relate the structure and function of the parasites and examine factors maintaining parasitic diseases in the communities.
9. Outline the pathological changes caused by the parasites to their hosts and assess the socio-economic importance of parasitic diseases to communities.
10. Recognize and sketch the important features of the parasites present in clinical specimens which are routinely used for diagnosis.
11. Discuss the control of parasitic diseases using a multidisciplinary approach.
