Objectives: 

  • By the end of the course, students should understand the nature of language and relationships between language, society and culture
  • Students should demonstrate knowledge of the basic concepts in the study of linguistics and phonetics as a basis for later study of language development and communication disabilities.
  • Students should identify and use basic phonetic and phonological levels of linguistic description

Content:

  • Introduction to language, society and culture
  • Linguistics and the scientific study of language
  • The speech mechanism and the production of sounds
  • General principles of phonetic description and analysis classification (IPA)
  • Introduction to the principles of phonology

Basic features of phonology in different Ugandan languages
