- By the end of the course, students should understand the nature of language and relationships between language, society and culture
- Students should demonstrate knowledge of the basic concepts in the study of linguistics and phonetics as a basis for later study of language development and communication disabilities.
- Students should identify and use basic phonetic and phonological levels of linguistic description

- Introduction to language, society and culture
- Linguistics and the scientific study of language
- The speech mechanism and the production of sounds
- General principles of phonetic description and analysis classification (IPA)
- Introduction to the principles of phonology
