Objectives:
- By the end of the course, students should be have the knowledge, attitudes and skills required for the diagnosis, assessment and intervention of clients with learning disabilities and autistic spectrum disorders (paediatric and adult clients)
- Students should show basic understanding of the ‘Total Communication’ approach

- Medical perspectives on learning disability
- Implications of a learning disability on communication development
- Introduction to the autistic spectrum
- Assessing clients with learning disabilities and autistic spectrum disorders
- Intervention methods and prioritisation
- ‘Total Communication’ and its application for clients with learning disabilities / autistic spectrum disorders
- Educational perspectives
- Liaison with other professionals and methods of prevention of learning disability
- Practical observation and practice with these client groups
