Course Description & Objectives: 

Objectives:

  • At the end of the course, students should be able to analyse and describe different kinds of language data
  • Students should be able to construct and interpret clinical assessments of speech and language samples for a range of Ugandan languages using analytical and problem solving skills
  • Students should have the knowledge and skills required when working with multi-lingual clients
  • Students should have basic understanding of theories of conversational analysis and its practical application within speech and language therapy

Content:

  • Elementary linguistic analysis: descriptive and analytical approaches
  • Elementary IPA phonetic transcription and analysis
  • Analysis of a short piece of normal speech data using broad phonetic transcription
  • Levels of language and their interaction morphology; syntax; (sentence structure – noun and verb phrases, clause analysis) semantics and pragmatics
  • Conversational analysis, turn-taking and repair
