Course Description & Objectives: 

This course covers properties of materials such as iron, ceramics, polymers and composites, and their defects.

Learning Outcomes: 

By the end of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Classify materials according to their properties.
  • Give applications of different materials.
  • Relate mechanical, thermal, electrical and optical properties to material structures.
  • Describe and draw phase diagrams, and use phase rule and equilibrium conditions.
  • Explain the role of the interfacial boundary between the components in establishing a coherent composite.
