Facilities Management

Introduction to facility management theory and practice, based on general property management.   The professional field of Facilities Management (FM) is growing turbulently worldwide.  Develop a rounded understanding of the contemporary context and potential strategic relevance of FM.  Relevance of business FM, the nature of FM and its scope, issues of outsourcing, building performance and building management, and the relevance of FM to the design and construction industry.  Provide an understanding of the current strategic role of the business FM profession and FM needs of the future.   

Final Year Research Project I&II

Each student shall work on an individual selected research project, but approved by the Department.  The project selected will constitute the final year dissertation.  In this phase the student is expected to develop a clear statement of the problem, the study objectives, prepare comprehensive literature review, develop a theoretical framework, and prepare the requisite research instruments.  Throughout the project duration, a supervisor appointed by the department will guide the student.

Construction Project Management

Professional Practice, Procedure and Ethics

The aim of this course is to expose students to issues of social responsibility in their future professional activities through analysis of case studies, exchange of information and affirmation and contestation of values by students; and professional input through lectures.  Considers the need for rules of professional conduct and practice; practice procedures for quantity surveyors; educational requirements and professional training; joint building council and professional organizations in building and construction industry and their status in Uganda; the independent role of a quantity sur

Building Surveying (2,1,3)

An introduction to the systematic investigation of building problems and development of appropriate skills involved in undertaking such work.  It includes the agencies and sources of defects in buildings, deterioration mechanisms affecting buildings, diagnosing, remedying and preventing building defects.  Common defects in buildings and their elements.        

Construction Technology IV

Consideration of integration of services installation and equipment to structure; consideration of proprietary building systems; introduction to aspects of civil engineering consideration; elements of soil retaining structures, pile foundation, underpinning, tunneling, simple brides, culvert, railway trunks including consideration of civil engineering plant and equipment.  Studio exercises given will be based on production drawings.

Quantity Surveying III (3,0,4)

The course builds up from principles of measurements and description of building works.  Application of principles of measurements and description of work to plumbing and drainage installation in simple buildings; electrical installation in simple buildings; a detailed study of the sections of the standard methods of measurements of buildings; measurement of alterations works and demolitions. 

Entrepreneurship for Technology (3,0,3)

An introduction to entrepreneurship and its application to new ventures as well as to existing small businesses.  Examines venture start-up, growth and harvesting as part of the venture life cycle.  Other areas examined include creativity and entrepreneurship.   Study the interplay of business and society in the context of business development in Uganda and contemporary business practice.  Formulation of a business plan, role of market research, legal aspects, budgets and sources of
