Course Description & Objectives: 

Lectures in AIDS clinical care include:

  • HIV antiretroviral therapy and management of HIV opportunistic infections.
  • Systemic effects of HIV/AIDS is discussed.
  • Other lecture topics cover laboratory tests, disease prevention, mother to child transmission, post-exposure prophylaxis and counselling in HIV.
  • Multiple case discussions of patients on antiretroviral therapy is an essential part of this course.
  • The students rotate through the infectious diseases clinic for a period of 4 - 6 weeks and participate in all activities (seeing patients, attending seminars) of the clinic and receive mentoring from experts in HIV medicine.

 

Learning Outcomes: 

By the end of the course the candidate should be able to suspect HIV infections according to history and symptoms.  He should recognise the acute HIV syndrome and AIDS related illnesses and know their treatment.  He should know the indications and contraindications of antiretroviral therapies.
