Course Description & Objectives: 

The course will cover the following: concepts and elements of innovations; history and theory of innovation systems; role and application of innovation systems in research and development; practice of innovation systems in agricultural and rural development (e.g. value chains, innovation platforms, innovation clusters etc); and designing and managing strategies for capacities to support innovation systems to work for the rural communities in Africa. 

Learning Outcomes: 

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Describe the key elements and drivers of innovations in Africa
  • Appreciate the role of innovations in catalysing agricultural and rural development
