Course Description & Objectives: 

The course shall comprise of supervised psychotherapy the aim of which is to help the student acquire skills in psychological methods of treatment.  Ethical and other problems encountered in the course of psychotherapy shall be highlighted. The training objectives are to: 

  • develop an understanding of psychological concepts and their application in psychiatric practice 
  •  learn the process of establishing, maintaining and ending psychotherapeutic relationship 
  • gain an understanding of the various manifestations of transference and counter-transference and of their use as therapeutic tools 
  • integrate the training experience into the practice of general psychiatry 
  • recognise ethical and moral problems encountered in the practice of psychotherapy and psychiatric practice.
