Course Description & Objectives: 

Recognizing that the subject of rural Development is wide, the coverage will be limited to certain        selected topics. The course will generally cover the following areas: a) concepts, theories and approaches to rural Development b) environmental and sustainable development concerns in rural areas c) population concerns d) gender concerns e) health issues f) education g) food security and nutrition. 

Learning Outcomes: 

At the end of the course, the students will be able to:

  • Understand the origins and scope of rural and agricultural development and the different approaches advocated for promoting it;
  • Appreciate the role of agriculture in economic development and to design strategies for agricultural growth and development;
  • Articulate the role of rural non-agricultural sector, the significance of rural growth linkages, and the functioning of rural factor markets;
  • Analyse and design policies and approaches to achieve rural development; and
  • Identify and evaluate the institutional framework for rural development and positive change
