Course Description & Objectives: 

This is an introductory course on heat and thermodynamics. The course covers central concepts of thermodynamics such as thermodynamic equilibrium, temperature and heat. Other major topics are kinetic theory, laws of thermodynamics, and their applications to the atmosphere and oceans.

Learning Outcomes: 

By the end of the course students should be able to:

  • Describe the concepts of temperature and explain how it is measured,
  • Give examples of heat transfer processes,
  • State laws of thermodynamics and discuss some of their applications,
  • Describe the molecular model of a gas, and
